Environmental portraits commissioned by an organisation providing microcredit to small businesses across South Africa. Produced mainly around Cape Town, with further work extending east through Port Elizabeth and into the Eastern Cape, the project documents people connected to the organisation in their homes, workshops and places of work. Participants were introduced through the organisation, allowing each portrait to be made within the environment connected to the person’s livelihood. Using a portable lighting setup on location, the series combines a consistent photographic approach with the individual character of each subject and setting. The resulting body of work presents a varied record of small businesses, working lives and the people supported through microfinance.
